What are the differences between the approaches?
Conventional medicine or mainstream medicine is the practice in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals (such as nurses, pharmacists, and therapists) treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery. It is based on science and evidence. Also called allopathic medicine, biomedicine, mainstream medicine, orthodox medicine, and Western medicine.
Integrative medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between doctor and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.
Alternative medicine is any medical treatment that is not part of conventional evidence-based medicine. It may include acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, herbal medicine, Reiki, meditation, massage, aromatherapy, hypnosis, Ayurveda, and several other treatments not normally prescribed by mainstream doctors.
Naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine employing a wide array of natural treatments, including homeopathy, herbalism, and acupuncture, as well as diet and lifestyle counseling. Naturopaths favor a holistic approach with non-invasive treatment and generally avoid the use of surgery and drugs. Naturopathic philosophy is based on a belief in vitalism and self-healing.
