That s what I wanted to learn when I sat down with SEO expert, Peter Hughes.

He’s been instrumental in helping our blog reach new audiences and offers some great information to help you do the same.

What is SEO?

SEO, Search Engine Optimization. is really the process of optimizing your content so that it gets found in search engines. It’s a little bit of a science—but think of it as writing content so people will find it.

Why is SEO important for your blog?

Nobody likes speaking to an empty room, right? You write content, you want it to be read, and you want it to be seen.

So writing content with SEO in mind just means, simply and ultimately, writing so people will find it … so people will get it, people will read about it, and people will learn about what you’ve got to say.

What are some of the things that a small business can do right now to boost the SEO of their blog?

The key piece to keep in mind is that you want to write content, not for search engines, but for the people reading it . But keep in mind, they still have to find that content.

If they’re finding it for the first time, they do that through what? Through a search engine.

Think about how people are going to interact and engage with the content that you’re writing.

Do they ask questions about it? Then think of blogs in a how-to sense: “Do I?” “How should I?” “Can I?” Those are typically the queries that people will search with on Google.

But you can also ask your customers. Ask how they search and how they look for specific things online. If you’ve got an idea for a topic, just ping your friends about it, ping customers—see what they say.

How would they find you? What would they search?

At the end of the day, SEO is all about understanding how your audience will search for your content.

It’s about paying attention to the ways that they search, the terms and topics they’re using, and the things that they’re looking for when they log on to sites like Google.

Once you know those things—you can alter your writing, tweak your headlines, and use the right wording to get your posts discovered by your next loyal reader.
