A Step-by-Step Guide for NEWBIES: How to Earn your CCENT/CCNA certification

This article is targeted at those of you who are just starting out on the path to Cisco certification.

First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on making the decision to pursue a Cisco certification. As you may know, Cisco certifications are becoming an industry norm, and no matter what kind of experience you have in the networking industry (even if you have no experience whatsoever), I believe you’re making a wise decision that will ultimately help you further your career.

Becoming a CCENT

To become a Cisco Certified Entry Level Technician, you have to pass the ICND1 exam. There are currently two versions of the ICND 1 exam: 640-822 ICND1 and 100-101 ICND1 Both of these exams will test your skills and knowledge on how to install, operate, and troubleshoot small branch office networks.

A. 640-822 ICND1 (Last day for this exam is septermber 30. 2013)

You can prepare for this exam by studying networking fundamentals in both theory and practice. The topics this exam covers are: connecting to a WAN, basic security and wireless concepts, routing and switching fundamentals, the TCP/IP and OSI models, IP addressing, WAN technologies, operating and configuring IOS devices, configuring RIPv2, static and default routing, implementing NAT and DHCP, and configuring simple networks.

B. 100-101 ICND1 (New version)

This exam will concentrate on the following networking topics: operation of IP Data Networks, LAN switching technologies, IP addressing (IPv4 IPv6), IP routing technologies, IP services (DHCP, NAT, ACLs), network device security, and basic troubleshooting.

What to Study and How to Study for the ICND 1 Exam

You can study for the exam by taking a course at your college/university or even online. It is also possible to gather your own materials and study on your own.

For me, studying independently has been the best option.

I have previously used the video course from Chris Bryant to prepare for my CCNA exam. In my honest opinion, his courses provide the best CCNA learning materiel at a very reasonable price.

CCNA 2014 200-120 Video Boot Camp With Chris Bryant

The material presented in this course is geared toward the CCNA, but you can choose to only watch the parts that are relevant for the ICND1 first. Then, if you later plan to go for ICND2  (I am sure that you will go for it!), you can still use this materiel without having to spend money on a separate course. With over 82 lectures and 24.5 hours of content, this course is phenomenal and comprehensive!

Below, you can find a few ideas about how to start studying for the ICND1/CIND2/CCNA exam on your own.

Even if you decide to take a course or to study on your own, these books come highly recommended as study guides.

You should definitely take a look at the Cisco CCENT/CCNA ICND1 100-101 Official Cert Guide if you are taking the new version of the exam.

These are the Official study guides from Cisco press.

It is very important to do the accompanying labs along with your ICND or CCNA studies. Build yourself a small lab with Cisco Routers and Switches or use a software program like Packet Tracer or GNS 3.

CCNA Routing and Switching 200-120 Network Simulator is highly recommended. if you want to get hand of practice.

Action Plan for the ICND exam

Here is the plan I used for all my certification exams. You might be able to use my process to come up with a few ideas of your own and apply them to your study program.

First, set a realistic date to sit for your exam. It is always a good idea to register for taking the exam. Once you have registered, you will have more motivation to focus, and you can set realistic and helpful goals for your studies. You can register for your exam on the Pearson Education (InformIT) website. Their site also offers Cisco Press books, videos, and other study materials you can use to your advantage.

Study plan for the CCENT exam

Watch a video from the CCNA boot camp

-Read the relevant book chapter

– Watch the video again and write down important information

– Do some of the labs from the chapter

– Try to answer or solve the questions provided in the chapter

– Go over your notes whenever you have free time

– Repeat this process for all the chapters/videos

– When you are finished with all the chapters, be sure to read through your notes every day for one week, and redo the labs

– Print the blueprint from the Cisco website

– Go through the blueprint and write down what you know about each topic

– If you have problems remembering the topics, go back to the book and reread the pertinent chapter

– Study your blueprint notes

– Do the practice questions/tests and labs

– Watch the videos again, from the beginning to the end

– When you feel you have adequately prepared yourself, take the exam

If you follow these suggestions and dedicate yourself to your studies, I am sure you will pass the exam with a high score!
