Family to Family Adoptions, Inc.
For Same-Sex Couples
Small boy with two men for parents
Family to Family advocates access to adoption for those persons who would be great parents and have been discriminated against by many agencies in the past. We welcome all prospective adoptive parents regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation or marital status. Our prospective adoptive pool includes heterosexual couples, same-sex couples and single parents. Your application will be considered based on its merits and your home study recommendation.
At our Tenth Year anniversary, we are proud to report that a full 22% of our 283 placements have been with the LGBT community. In 2009 we placed 35% of our total placements with Gay and Lesbian couples and in 2010 the percentage was 28%.
Our organization honors the integrity of every prospective family and applies assessment criteria evenly. Our staff that is responsible for performing home studies exhibits cultural competence at all times in talking with and writing about LGBT-headed families. We are comfortable in using appropriate language, know about legal issues and policy-related decisions that have an impact on same-sex couples in relevant jurisdictions and are able to access support services for LGBT families.
If you do want to adopt through Family to Family Adoptions, Inc, we will work with you in an open and transparent manner and present you as a couple. I want to take this opportunity to discuss the adoption process in regards to finalization in Texas. It is the only way in which Family to Family’s procedures are different for same-sex couples than for heterosexual couples or singles.
Texas does not recognize finalization by same-sex couples, however, they do allow for second parent adoption. Most Texas attorneys who work with same-sex couples have the second parent adoption finalized in Bexar County (San Antonio) Texas. We will terminate the rights of your birth parents in Fort Bend County (Richmond) Texas and our judges here will require that if you reside in Texas, one of you must finalize as a single in their courts. They generally will not transfer the jurisdiction of the case to another county for finalization for same sex couples or singles in Texas. However, if you live out of state, the judges will comply with your attorney’s request for transfer of jurisdiction to your home state. Please feel free to contact our office with any additional questions you have regarding the adoption process as a same-sex couple.
